Mayor America receives Award of Excellence

LGU-Infanta bags Best MGADC

Residents of this town of humble beginnings have now double reasons to celebrate.

One is when Municipal Mayor Filipina Grace R. America was given an Award of Excellence during the Provincial Women’s Day Celebration on March 12, 2010 at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City  in line with the Search for Quezon’s Ladies First 2010 as recognition to women achievers who have been the FIRST in their own field of expertise and whose accomplishments have made a significant impact to the development of the province and the nation as a whole.

Another cause to rejoice is when Municipal Gender and Development Council-Infanta garnered the Major Award for its astonishing performance as the outstanding MGADC in Quezon Province for the Year 2009 Category A on that same occasion.  Only 8 municipalities participated in this competition--of Lopez, Pagbilao, Sariaya, Gen. Luna, Infanta, Macalelon, Real, and Candelaria.  MGADC-Infanta bested 5 other MGADC’s in the Category A  that includes the city & 1st class municipalities. MGADC-Infanta won PhP20,000.00 cash prize and a plaque. Real’s emerged as 2009’s 1st runner-up; Lopez’s, 2nd runner-up; Sariaya’s, 3rd runner-up;  Candelaria’s and Pagbilao’s both got consolation prizes.  No MGADC’s participated in Category B that includes 2nd & 3rd class municipalities.  However, with the Category C that includes 4th to 6th class municipalities, Macalelon’s became the Outstanding MGADC while Gen. Luna’s got the 1st runner-up.

This Award of Excellence is one milestone in Mayor America’s 17-year stint in public service with LGU-Infanta holding different positions as elected municipal councilor for 6 years (2 terms) , as elected vice-mayor for  < 2 years, as appointed mayor for > 2 months, and as elected vice-mayor again for > 2 years, and appointed mayor for < 1 year, and elected mayor for 6 years (2 terms).  She is seeking re-election for the same office come May 10, 2010 Local Elections. This time, her achievements and expertise as the First Lady Municipal Mayor in Quezon are recognized after she successfully adopted and innovated the Community-Based Disaster Preparedness Program when flashfloods nearly submerged this town in November 2004. The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Infanta was a recipient of Gawad Galing Pook Award in 2007 when the Development Bank of the Philippines cited this LGU for effective local fiscal management.

Awarding for the Outstanding Municipal Gender & Development Council determines the status of the GAD mainstreaming in every municipality & gives due recognition to LGU’s who have done remarkable breakthrough in addressing gender issues in all the development projects and programs at the local level.  MGADC-Infanta has been consistently receiving awards since it joined this competition in 2005, to cite:  2005, consolation prize; 2006, 3rd runner-up; 2007, 2nd runner-up; and 2008, 1st runner-up.

Around 150 delegates witnessed the awarding consisting of:  LGU-Infanta employees; members of MGADC, Men Opposed Violence Against Women Everywhere, Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipino, and Urabayan; Day Care Workers; and members of other special committees.
